In a recent YouTube video, I shared a personal aspect of my life that has intrigued a few of you — my experience living with aphantasia. Before I begin I must give a special shoutout to the Aphantasia Network website which has been an amazing resource of knowledge and understanding for me. It's a treasure trove of information for anyone looking to understand this fascinating condition.

What is Aphantasia?
Aphantasia is a condition characterised by the inability to voluntarily create mental images in one's mind. Imagine being asked to picture a beach at sunset, the waves gently lapping at the shore, the sky a blaze of orange and pink hues. For someone with aphantasia this exercise doesn't conjure any internal visual pictures. Instead, we might understand the concept and details of the scene without the mental imagery to accompany it.
The Effects of Aphantasia
Living with aphantasia is a unique experience that varies from person to person. Some common effects include difficulties with memory recall, particularly when trying to remember visual details and challenges with spatial awareness or navigation. However, it's not all challenges. Many of us find that we have developed a heightened ability in other areas, such as abstract thinking, verbal skills, and focused attention that isn't easily swayed by visual distractions.
Aphantasia and Organisational Coaching
You might wonder how aphantasia intersects with my profession as an organisational coach. Interestingly, some of the effects of aphantasia align closely with skills that are beneficial in coaching. For instance, the ability to remain focused on one person without distractions is paramount in coaching sessions. My aphantasic mind is less likely to wander into visual daydreams, allowing me to stay deeply engaged with my clients and their narratives.
This focused attention also aids in listening and understanding without preconceived visual judgments, fostering a pure form of empathy and connection. In a coaching context, being present and genuinely attentive can make all the difference, enabling me to guide clients through their organisational challenges with clarity and purpose.
Embracing Aphantasia
Learning about aphantasia and connecting with others through platforms like the Aphantasia Network has been instrumental in embracing this aspect of myself. It has allowed me to appreciate the unique ways in which I perceive the world and how this perception enriches my professional practice.
To my fellow aphantasics, I hope you find solace in knowing you're not alone. And to those who are curious or just learning about aphantasia, I'm thrilled to share this journey with you. It's a reminder of the diverse tapestry of human experience and how our differences shape our strengths in unexpected, beautiful ways.
Let's continue this conversation. If you have questions or experiences with aphantasia you'd like to share, feel free to drop a comment. Your stories and curiosity are what makes this community so special.
